Mickey Dunlap
Here is a great period Mini Trail photo of Mickey Dunlap back in the day when he was about 10 years old.
These days, Mickey runs http://www.fourstroketech.net selling high quality products for three & four wheelers.
In the early 1980’s Mickey was a factory Honda ATC rider & before that he had great success in two & three wheeled dirt track & motocross racing.
This is obviously a very early shot in Mickeys career.
Mickey notes:
“My dad Ralph & I built all my early racebikes. This bike started as a Candy Gold CT70 that we modified with 8″ wheels off of a Z50 Minitrail so that it would fit in the under 10″ wheel class. The motor had a high compression piston, performance cam & a Webco finned intake mated to a bigger carb. We took a head pipe off of a CL70 & extended it straight back to 28″ in length. The seat was an aftermarket chopper seat that was only about 2″ high & was very light. The handlebars were flat track bars that came way back. We removed the front brake for weight savings.
I wore a steel shoe for dirt track & we welded something slick to the bottom for the tacky clay tracks.
The photo was taken at the 1/8th mile Mud Slingers dirt track races in Grand Mountain Washington in 1972. I also raced that bike a lot at a short track in Rainier Washington.”
Mickeys racing gear, replete with with stars down the legs of the leathers & tassels on the jacket, only add to the flavor of this photo, which is a great period piece.
Mickey has this framed in poster size on the wall of his shop. I would too.
My Dad passed away so I went out to Washington state for 10 days. While I was out there I found some more pics, I thought you might like this one. This was at the beginning of quieting everything down so they offered $10 to the winner if they won the “A” main with a stock pipe. I was the only one to get paid $ lol
